The latest laptop from Toshiba is the Portege A605 extra portable and barely larger than a calculator. The screen measures just 12.1 inches, weighs 3.3 lbs, and only 1.18 inches thick but packs the power of the larger R500 Toshiba laptop. But being tiny is not the only claim to fame the Portege A605 has, it's also green.

That's right, the A605 laptop meets all Energy Star 4.0 requirements. So now you can feel good about buying that $4 latte at starbucks while tapping away on that novel you want everyone around you to think you are writing.

Toshiba To Make EL Display

Two somethineese companies Toshiba and Matsushita are teaming up to create EL Displays. Basically that means the companies are grouping up to help make the worlds smallest, highest quality, possibly most useful displays.

EL displays are based on organic light-emitting diode (OLED) technology that uses electroluminescent organic materials. The display panels are extremely thin because they don't need backlights. The electroluminescent layer contains a polymer substance that directly converts electricity to light

Toshiba To Bring HDDVD Back In China

The world's largest population has decided that they prefer HD-DVD over Blu-Ray. This means the format war may not be officially over and perhaps we are just getting started with what may turn out to be another battle in the next generation high definition media war.

The DVD Steering Committee also approved updated specifications Chinese HD DVD format (C-HD DVD) and has not yet cancelled further discussions on the general HD DVD format yet. In addition to several specification approvals passed in the February 27, 2008 meeting the Committee also passed the HD DVD-Video Product Requirement & Guideline Version 1.2 in the June 11 meeting.

I kind of wonder if this will have any effect on the price of HD-DVDs falling and players becoming obsolete in the US. Surely if there is enough demand in China that demand will filter into the US, as long as the movie industries can stay out of it and not be choosing sides. Personally I'm hoping the less expensive format wins, but I was always backing Toshiba.

Toshiba has managed to create the absolute smallets HD camera ever and this thing is micro machine small. The Toshiba IK-HD1 weighs only 2.3 ounces and just adorable. But, it's price is what makes up for it's very small stature, you can purchase an IK-HD1 for $9,700.

So, just how bad do you want the world's smallest HD camera? Also, this begs the question, why do you need one so small? ...nevermind, I'm not sure i want to know.

Is it so much to ask? All I want to do is take my entire music collection, backups, movies, and every photo of me since I was 5 years old everywhere I go. Apparently Toshiba doesn't think so with their latest 250 GB portable Hard Drive. The HDDR250E03X is a freaking monster with more than enough storage for typical applications and just enough over kill to make you the coolest boy in the locker room.

If you are looking for a deal, you can find them for less than $105 at places like Amazon.com. But seriously, when did the price of storage drop so much? I can remember spending almost $200 on an internal 40gb hard drive. Geesh, hope I didn't just so my age.

Toshiba’s Pocket Pc e805 runs Windows mobile 2003 on a 400MHZ Intel PXA263 processor. This handheld device has plenty of features, including built in memory card slots, integrated Wi-Fi capabilities, 128 MB of RAM, 4-inch TFT screen with a 240×320 pixel resolution with 65,336 colors. Toshiba and SanDisk are not partnering to develop the next line of memory cards, to surpass the capabilities of the current flash memory. While the idea of 3D Memory is not new, actual development has not been attempted on this scale. What Toshiba and SanDisk hope to accomplish is a rewritable 3d Memory media.

You may have heard of another player in the 3d Memory market by the name of Matrix. In 2005 SanDisk acquired Matrix, which had already developed a non-rewritable 3d Memory design.

No matter what, expect several years from now before you actually have to replace those little flash disks you keep in your cameras, laptops, video cameras, wherever.

I thought I would take the time to explain to you a little bit about the Toshiba Manufacturing Company and their history. This post will briefly detail their beginnings, how they entered the US market, and what the future holds for Toshiba.

One, Tanaka Seizosho (Tanaka Engineering Works), was Japan's first manufacturer of telegraph equipment and was established by Hisashige Tanaka in 1875. In 1904, its name was changed to Shibaura Seisakusho (Shibaura Engineering Works). Through the first part of the 20th century Shibaura Engineering Works became a major manufacturer of heavy electrical machinery as Japan modernized during the Meiji Era and became a world industrial power.

Toshiba was responsible for a number of Japanese firsts, including radar (1942), the TAC digital computer (1954), transistor television and microwave oven (1959), color video phone (1971), Japanese word processor (1978), MRI system (1982), laptop personal computer (1986), NAND EEPROM (1991), DVD (1995), the Libretto sub-notebook personal computer (1996) and HD DVD (2005).

In 1987, Toshiba Machine, the subsidiary of Toshiba, was accused of illegally selling CNC milling machines used to produce very quiet submarine propellers to the Soviet Union in violation of the CoCom agreement, an international embargo on Western exports to East Bloc countries. The Toshiba-Kongsberg scandal involved a subsidiary of Toshiba and the Norwegian company Kongsberg Vaapenfabrikk. The incident strained relations between the United States and Japan, and resulted in the arrest and prosecution of two senior executives, as well as the imposition of sanctions on the company by both countries.[2] The US had always relied on the fact that the Soviets had noisy boats, so technology that would make the USSR's submarines harder to detect created a significant threat to America's security. Senator John Heinz of Pennsylvania said "What Toshiba and Kongsberg did was ransom the security of the United States for $517 million."

The HD future for Toshiba

Toshiba's president has stated that the company has no intention to begin manufacturing Blu-ray disc players and he also said that Toshiba will "think about its role in online video-downloading more seriously". The press release stated the following; "Toshiba also intends to maintain collaborative relations with the companies who joined with Toshiba in working to build up the HD DVD market, including Universal Studios, Paramount Pictures, and DreamWorks Animation and major Japanese and European content providers on the entertainment side, as well as leaders in the IT industry, including Microsoft, Intel, and HP. Toshiba will study possible collaboration with these companies for future business opportunities, utilizing the many assets generated through the development of HD DVD."

Toshiba Pulls Out of Format War

It looks like Toshiba has finally decided to stop supporting HD-DVD, citing that it would benefit the industry and customers in the long run.

"We carefully assessed the long-term impact of continuing the so-called 'next-generation format war' and concluded that a swift decision will best help the market develop," said Atsutoshi Nishida, President and CEO of Toshiba Corporation. "While we are disappointed for the company and more importantly, for the consumer, the real mass market opportunity for high definition content remains untapped and Toshiba is both able and determined to use our talent, technology and intellectual property to make digital convergence a reality."

I'm shocked, but hopefully the prices of Blu-Ray players and Blu-Ray DVDs will finally start dropping. Until then, looks like I'm sticking with my standard definition library...for now.

Longevity In OLED TVs

Toshiba has made a break through announcement about doubling the life of OLED TVs. The OLED TVs while beautiful and a sight to behold had significantly shorter life spans than normal LCD TVs. Expect life spans a little less than 40% of regular LCD TVs.

But what it really means to us thrifty consumers is that we will have a TV we could pass on to our children. 40% may seem drastic, but consider that old OLED TVs had a life span of about 30,000 hours or 8hrs of non-stop boob tube watching per day for 10 years. EEEeeeeek! No, my eyes will fall out long before I reach that milestone, but thanks to Toshiba it will now be doubled to 20 years and 60,000 hours of use.

Toshiba is fighting back against allegations that HD-DVD is going to lose the format war. In a strong move on Monday, Toshiba announced HUGE price cuts on all their popular HD-DVD players, including the HD-A30 player.

It looks like right now it's another win for consumers, because Blu-Ray will have to do some sort of price maneuver to not look like the stuck up step father. If Toshiba captures enough market, studios pledging allegiance to the Blu-Ray clan will not be able to ignore consumer demand. According to Toshiba 4th quarter of 07 shown they had a 50% market share in next generation DVD players.

So, who else is going to be buying a brand new HD-DVD player this year?

Samsung Announces Full HD Camcorder, HMX 20

Some might argue that this TV is not up to the 'sony/samsung' level. I believe they are entirely right. But a 47" 1080p for $1500 with a good picture, who can argue with that.

Toshiba Competition with Venturer

Is the new Venturer SHD7000 really competition for the superior Toshiba HD-A2 or HD-A30? The Venturer is the latest cut price HD player at Wal-mart, which talked about offering an HD-DVD player for under $200 a few months ago. Well, it's now available and at a price of $197...it's still priced right at the neighborhood of the better brand Toshiba models.

A double whamy partnership for Toshiba and DreamWorks, whom are known for their colorful and detailed animated films.

Resolutions so fine, so abundant, I'm fairly certain my eyes won't be able to tell the difference. Toshiba's new 22" LCD HD TV packs a whopping 3,840 x 2,400 pixel resolution that would make my optometrist blush. Are you sold yet? If the answer is 'yes', then give me your wallet and listen to this.

The Toshiba 22" LCD is only available in Japan. The price of this little toy translates into $26,000 USD, so chances are we won't see it over in the good ole US of A anyway.
